wheels

Round disks fitted with an axle at their center for supporting a load-carrying device. Early representations of wheels show them to be solid and anchored to the axle, the whole combination turning beneath the bed of the vehicle. Subsequent developments freed the wheel to turn on the axle, designed spoked wheels with rims for lighter weight and maneuverability, and adapted the device to uses other than transportation (a potter’s wheel for shaping the clay (Jer 18:3) or a pulley for use in raising water from a cistern (Eccl 12:6). In addition to those on carts, wagons, and chariots, biblical writers refer to wheels on the Temple court lavers (1Kgs 7:30-33), four on each. Ezekiel’s vision of God’s throne includes wheels with eyes (Ezek 1:4-28), and in (Dan 4:9) they are part of the throne support. The crushing effect of a wheel is behind (Prov 20:26), and the rumble of wheels bespoke destruction (Nah 3:2).
